Winter Greetings from the Center for Game Science

openhouse“Let us love winter, for it is the spring of genius.” – Pietro Aretino

Here at the Center for Game Science, we are already making plans for a productive (and possibly genius)  2015. Most recently, our top games Nanocrafter and Foldit have been making the news with these headlines:

Additionally, we recently participated in UW’s Computing Open House and Seattle’s Public Library’s Hour of Code event to celebrate Computer Science Education Week. Be sure to keep an eye on some of the great things we have coming up, including:

An all new Nanocrafter website is underway. Our developers have been working diligently on this endeavor and the site is going through a final bit of testing before debuting fully upon the world. If you haven’t visited Nanocrafter in a while, make it part of your New Year resolutions to get into crowd science with this up and coming star!

Regular community chats with the scientists and developers of Foldit, with great new content planned and the likely return of Black Belt Folding, our community driven series to help guide users through some of the trickier concepts of the game.

Exciting times are also ahead for Algebra Challenge (we know you’ve been asking!) and going into next summer with our community here at UW and beyond. Be sure you are following us on all our channels to get the latest!

Computing Open House This Weekend!

CGS-logoAre you local to the University of Washington? Planning a trip to Seattle this weekend to do your holiday shopping? Come on by Computing Open House this Saturday from 1-5pm and celebrate the start of Computer Science Education Week and computer pioneer Grace Hopper’s birthday.

Come on by and play some of your Center for Game Science favorite titles, learn all about our newest title Nanocrafter (and perhaps tinker around with our new Nanocrafter website, debuting soon) – and perhaps even take a peek at some of the projects we’re working on here.

You won’t want to miss it!

Foldit Creates Young Scientists

IMG_7620 This past weekend, the Center from Game Science was joined by scientists from the Baker Lab to help bring the joy of science (and protein folding) to visitors of all ages at the eighth annual Life Sciences Research Weekend.

Business was brisk at Pacific Science Center with hopeful players peeking over shoulders, or waiting a turn nearby at our protein coloring station featuring six different designs created by Foldit players.

See our collection of pictures from the weekend on our Flickr account or Facebook pages for more weekend snapshots.

We’ll be tucked away working on things during November and working with some local school groups for playtests (so things may be a bit quiet), but if you want to come see the Center for Game Science in person, your next chance will be the CSE Computing Open House early next month. See you there!

Nanocrafter and Foldit at Games For Health Europe ’14!

zoranpopovicToday, Center for Game Science Director Zoran Popović spoke at the Games For Health Europe conference. Attendees enjoyed a presentation about crowdsourced science through our premier game Foldit and our new title that debuted in April, synthetic biology rising star Nanocrafter. As a bonus, attendees were treated to a early version of our new Nanocrafter video (debuting soon to a website near you).
